Can Money Buy Happiness?

      I once saw a caricature that depicted an ironic scene: a man who was overloaded with a large piece of gold was making every effort to creep forward. It gives a vivid image to a serious topic--can money buy happiness?

      To increase wealth is what an individual desires and what a society needs. A person's desire can never be satisfied and social progress has no ending. Therefore, making money is one of the essential activities that define a person's existence.

      Happiness results from mental satisfaction. If people can never be satisfied with making money, then money is something distant from happiness. Although the man mentioned above possesses much money, he suffers from the weight of gold. It is not exceptional that some millionaires are not happy at all. Indeed, money can buy wealth, but it cannot buy happiness.

     Nevertheless money is not contradiction with happiness when making money is regarded as a means to attain a definite end. In a word, more attention should be focused on orientation of life when it comes to the subject—Can money buy happiness?

     With money, one can buy whatever he enjoys. With money, one can do whatever he likes. So, in some minds, money can bring comfort and security. Money, as some think, is the source of happiness.

     There are others who think that money is the root of all evil. It is man's desire for more and more money that drives him to do anything, whether good or bad. Many people lie for money, fight for money, and even die for money.

     From my point of view, money is essential to life and may bring happiness, but happiness is far more than that. Physical health and mental well-being are both essential to life satisfaction. Love is fundamental to personal happiness in life, too. Self-esteem, is another crucial factor that produces happiness. All these can't be measured or bought by money. Therefore, we can never reckon only on money to achieve happiness. Money is a blessing when used well; it's a curse when abused.
